Mathematics, Statistics Concentration B.S. + Statistics M.S.

The Mathematics, Statistics Concentration B.S. + Statistics M.S., a blended program that shortens the time required to earn a B.S. and M.S., features state-of-the-art courses that cover a wide range of statistical methods and techniques. Emphasizing real-world applications, the curriculum integrates modern statistical software and programming languages, allowing students to engage in hands-on projects and case studies to develop their ability to analyze and interpret complex datasets effectively. For those aspiring to pursue a Ph.D., the program offers research opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research alongside faculty members, providing invaluable experience to develop the advanced analytical and critical thinking skills necessary for doctoral studies.

In addition to the program requirements below, students must meet all other university requirements for the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Admission Requirements


The decision to admit a student to the program is made by the Statistics Graduate Committee. The following are minimum requirements for admission to the blended program:

  • Mathematics major with Statistics concentration.
  • MATH 335  with a “B” (3.0) or better.
  • 3.0 or better overall GPA in Mathematics and Statistics courses.

Exceptions may be made by the Statistics Graduate Committee.

Additional Information: Blended Program


The blended Mathematics, Statistics B.S. + M.S. allows students to apply 12 units to both degrees. Double counted courses cannot be substituted. Please consult the Blended Programs  section in this catalog for more information.

The following satisfies 12 units of required coursework for the B.S. and M.S.:

Students will receive their Mathematics, Statistics Concentration Bachelor of Science upon fulfilling the B.S. degree requirements. Students must take MATH 530  before taking any other required graduate-level courses. At the end of the blended program, they will receive their Master of Science in Statistics.

If a student discontinues the blended program, to fulfill the requirements for the B.S. in Mathematics, Statistics Concentration, MATH 530  may be substituted for both MATH 435  and MATH 438 MATH 536  or MATH 534  may be substituted for MATH 439 .

All courses must be taken for a letter grade and be completed with a “C” (2.0) or better.

M.S. Degree Requirements (30 Units)


Special Topic (3 units)


Topic must be adviser-approved.

Culminating Experience (6 Units)


The culminating experience marks the end of a graduate program. It demonstrates mastery of disciplinary materials and meets requirements from Section 40510 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. Please consult the Culminating Experience section in this catalog for more information.
