Master of Fine Arts in Art

The Master of Fine Arts in Art is a rigorous studio arts program for students who seek to develop a sustained creative practice as a professional artist. Through intensive studio work and study, the curriculum and faculty challenge students to deepen their creative exploration, preparing them to make meaningful contributions to the field of art.

The program provides in-depth study in the following concentrations: ceramics; creative photography and experimental media; drawing and painting (including printmaking); glass; graphic and interactive design; illustration; jewelry and metals; and sculpture.

Admission Requirements

Students must meet the CSU requirements for admission to the master’s degree degree program. Please consult the Graduate Admissions section in this catalog for complete information. In addition, requirements for the program include the following:

Preferably a BA or BFA in Art, but other degrees may be considered.
A portfolio, which is the most critical element in the admissions process. Applicants with degrees in other fields are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate a strong body of work and proficiency in studio practice.
Artist statement.
Statement of purpose.
Two letters of recommendation.
Copies of transcripts.
Applicants whose undergraduate degree was completed in a country where English is not the primary language must submit proof of English language proficiency. Please review the Office of Admissions website for specific program exam requirements and benchmarks.

Classified Standing

A classified graduate student has been recommended for admission and has satisfied all prerequisites and admission requirements for both the Department of Art and the university.

Conditionally Classified Standing

Students who do not meet certain prerequisites may be considered for admission in conditionally classified graduate standing. Students must successfully satisfy all the requirements of conditional standing in order to become classified.

Degree Requirements

All courses must be completed with a “C” (2.0) or better. All courses in the concentration must be completed with a “B” (3.0) or better. The degree must be completed with a 3.0 (B) GPA or higher. Students must also satisfy all graduate degree requirements.

Core (6 units)

Culminating Experience (9 units)

The culminating experience marks the end of a graduate program. It demonstrates mastery of disciplinary materials and meets requirements from Section 40510 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. For further information, consult with the graduate program adviser and refer to the Culminating Experience section of this catalog.

Art History Electives (9 units)

A minimum of 3 units must be 500-level.

Studio Art Electives (12 units)

A minimum of 9 units must be 500-level.

Glass Concentration (24 units)

The Glass concentration encourages students to take a leadership role in glass education and critical thinking. Students explore theory and processes needed to address aesthetic issues. The program emphasizes experimentation with the medium to encourage individual style and expression in order to prepare a personal body of work.
