The Bachelor of Arts in Dance is for developing artists seeking a broad and rich background in both theory and practice. The progam fosters the skills, understanding and discipline of developing dance artists. Faculty teach students as individuals, taking pride in keeping classes small to provide differentiated feedback. The robust curriculum includes intensive training in modern/contemporary dance, ballet, hip-hop styles and composition classes through a lens of cultural competency, complemented by improvisation, dance history, kinesiology, pedagogy, African American concert dance history, jazz and tap. Based in Mindful Rigor, the nurturing yet rigorous environment offers dance majors many transformative experiences to develop their unique artistry, through foundational support courses, Yoga and mindful conditioning. Throughout the year, dance majors have up to seven unique performance opportunities. Graduating students leave prepared technically and creatively to pursue work in dance and related areas.
Admittance into the major is by audition. The entrance audition also functions as the placement audition. Students entering the program are required to attend an advising session before enrolling in major classes.
