American Studies Minor

(15 UNITS)

The Minor in American Studies is a flexible, low-unit degree that complements any major. The program explores U.S. culture in the present and past to provide students with a multi-faceted view of America and their own experiences. Topics include race, immigration, gender, sexuality, body politics, popular culture, work, class, community, technology, the arts, leisure and consumption, crime and violence, nature and the environment, sports, mental health, film, fashion, literature, creative work, childhood, family, civil rights and more.

Students will analyze and interpret a wide range of sources while developing critical thinking and communication skills. American Studies graduates find careers in business, communications, government, law, media, social services, non-profits, teaching and other fields.

Program Requirements (15 units)

A minimum of 12 units for the minor must be distinct from coursework applied to the major. A maximum of 6 units may be lower-division courses; a minimum of 3 units must be 400-level. GE-approved AMST courses may double count for GE and the minor.
