Introduction
The Literacy and Reading Education Department offers state and nationally accredited graduate programs in literacy education. Programs include the Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Literacy and Reading, the Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist Credential, and the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization. Coursework, clinical practicums and fieldwork experiences equip candidates to make informed decisions in a variety of leadership roles. Based on the professional dispositions targeted by the College of Education, the graduate programs are designed to prepare specialized literacy professionals who promote equity, diversity and inclusion.The department also offers a minor in Literacy Education that focuses on education through a literacy, community and social justice lens.
Degree Description
The Master of Science in Education in Literacy and Reading develops specialized equity-minded literacy professionals who can recognize, understand and value the forms of literacy that exists in society and their importance in learning across the disciplines at all levels pre-K through adult. Coursework focuses on foundations of literacy development, disciplinary literacy, multi-literacies, curriculum theory and design, assessment and intervention, and theory-to-practice fieldwork experiences. Graduates of the program become informed decision-makers, with knowledge and skill in the use of a variety of pedagogical approaches, methods and practices. The program emphasizes issues of social justice, diversity and inclusiveness, and critical stances in literacy instruction and assessment that empowers all learners to read to their full potential.
