Introduction
The Department of Theatre and Dance strives to inspire, nurture, challenge, educate and empower our students within a diverse and inclusive environment. We aim to raise awareness, instill compassion and advocate for our community, supporting our students in their creative and academic persuits. Committed to developing innovative and unique educational experiences, the department strives to cultivate curiosity and prepare our students to be tomorrow’s artists and cultural leaders.
As a department, we are committed to providing students with real-world training through hands-on curriculum. Our professional faculty and staff are dedicated to preparing students for all facets of the theatre industry and academia. Presenting theatre in front of a live audience is central to the educational mission of our program. Students participate in every aspect of our productions from design, performance and stage management to production, direction and dramaturgy.
In the areas of performance, design and technical production, high-impact practices encourage lifelong learning habits, collaborative skills and team dynamics that ready students for future success. At CSUF, the stage is a classroom and our performances a testament to the hard work and skill of our students.
Driven by a passion for the stage, we strive to create a student-centered educational environment that builds upon the artistic skills of students while preparing them to adapt, innovate and respond to the ever-changing professional performing arts environment.
Degree Descriptions
The Bachelor of Arts in Dance is for students seeking a broad and rich background in both theory and practice. The degree is designed to foster the skills, understanding and discipline of young dance artists. The performance-based curriculum includes intensive training in ballet, modern/contemporary dance and dance composition; complemented by improvisation, dance history, kinesiology, pedagogy, jazz and diverse performance experiences. Our graduating students leave prepared technically and creatively to pursue work in dance and related areas.
The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts provides the opportunity for students to focus on the breadth of Theatre Arts studies. The curriculum core requires study in acting, directing, sesign and production, history, literature and theatre criticism. Students are required to participate in department production activities including plays, musicals, dance and opera. Students must participate in 5 units of 278B/478B Production crew for first year students and 3 units for transfer students. This provides the opportunity for students to develop tecinical knowledge and observe the production process through participation in the technical development of a departmental production.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre is a pre-professional training program that prepares students for a professional career in theatre both in plays and musicals, and television and film. The program seeks students who exhibit exceptional talent, motivation and commitment, and combines rigorous coursework with ample opportunity to apply the training in performance.
The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre is a professional training program that prepares student to work in theatre. There are two concentrations for the graduate program: Design and Technical Production; and Directing. These programs are for students who desire a professionally oriented education and training in design and technical production and directing. Students in the MFA program are at the core of our departmental productions, leading the department in all areas of design and productions. Students receive one-on-one mentoring, which supports a tailor-made educational process that guides students toward success.
