(6 UNITS)

The Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work and Child Welfare and Attendance is required of social workers who wish to practice school social work in the public school setting.

The credential authorizes the holder to: assess home, school and community factors that may affect a student’s learning; identify and provide intervention strategies for children and their families, including counseling, case managements and crisis intervention; consult with teachers, administrators and other school staff regarding social and emotional needs of students; and coordinate family, school and community resources on behalf of students.

Admission Requirements

Students may indicate their intention to apply for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work and Child Welfare and Attendance (PPS) when applying for admission to the Masters in Social Work program. They may also declare their intention to pursue the PPS credential after admission as long as they have maintained continuous enrollment in the MSW program. In addition, students need to declare their interest before the application process for the second-year field placement process. If they leave the MSW program, readmission is required in order to pursue the credential. It is strongly recommended that students complete credential requirements while working on their MSW if their intention is to pursue work as a school social worker.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work and Child Welfare and Attendance credential, students must fulfill the following:
