Bachelor of Science in Child and Adolescent Studies

The Bachelor of Science in Child and Adolescent Studies provides an integrative, interdisciplinary study of children (from prenatal through adolescence), families and the contexts that influence development. This broad background makes Child and Adolescent Studeis a good foundation for a variety of professions that serve children, families and their communities.

The degree offers three concentrations that allow students to focus on the population and context in which they are interested: Early Childhood Education; Elementary Education; and Family and Community Contexts.

In addition to the requirements for the major, students must meet all other university requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Please consult the Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree  section in this catalog for complete information. A “C” (2.0) or better is required in all courses applied to the major. Course prerequisites are strictly enforced.

Early Childhood Education Concentration (24 units)

The Early Childhood Education concentration is for students pursuing careers in early childhood education and family care settings, from infancy/toddler programs through the primary grades. It also prepares students for early childhood special education or PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist credential programs. Courses emphasize children’s early development and learning, strategies to engage in developmentally appropriate practices, creation of early childhood environments rich in language, literacy and other foundational skills, observation and assessment, family engagement, and culturally competent work with young children and their families.

The coursework aligns the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s professional standards for bachelor’s programs and the education requirements of the California Child Development Permit Matrix.
