Bachelor of Science in Child and Adolescent Studies
The Bachelor of Science in Child and Adolescent Studies requires 51 units of major coursework. All majors complete 27 units of core courses. In addition, majors choose one of four concentrations that each include 24 units of coursework. The concentrations allow students to focus on the population and context in which they are interested: Adolescent/Youth Development; Early Childhood Development; Elementary School Settings; and Family and Community Contexts.
In addition to the requirements for the major, students must meet all other university requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Please consult the Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree section in this catalog for complete information. A “C” (2.0) or better is required in all courses applied to the major. Course prerequisites are strictly enforced.
Adolescent/Youth Development Concentration (24 units)
The Adolescent/Youth Development concentration provides an in-depth study of concepts and strategies central to understanding and supporting healthy adolescent development and the transition to adulthood. It is designed to provide foundational knowledge for students intending to work with youth in diverse contexts, including:
- non-profit, youth development and community-based organizations
- social service, social work and juvenile justice programs
- school and special education settings, from middle school to the transition to college
Coursework within the concentration also prepares students for graduate studies in education, social work, counseling, psychology and other related fields.

Topical Development Course in Diversity (3 units)
The course selected to fulfill the diversity requirement cannot be double-counted toward other topical development course requirements.
Topical Developmental Courses (15 units)
Additional Information
At least three of the six concentration-specific courses from Topical Development Course in Diversity and Topical Developmental Courses must be from CAS
