Applied Computer Science, M.S.

The Master of Science in Applied Computer Science provides students with a strong foundation in applied computing, focusing on software development, state-of-the-art knowledge of modern computing technologies and practices, and practical application development skills needed in selected areas that are high in workforce demand. The accelerated, cohort-based program prepares students for careers as software engineers/developers, managers or researchers, whereupon graduation, they can directly participate in industry or research projects for advanced study without additional industry training.

The M.S. in Applied Computer Science is offered as a 16-month program through Extension and International Programs.

Admission Requirements


Prospective students will be admitted to the proposed program in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined in the Graduate Admissions  section of the catalog. In addition, applicants will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 for applicants graduated from domestic (U.S.) institutions or ABET-accredited international institutions with undergraduate degrees in computer science or closely related fields.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 for applicants graduated from non-ABET accredited international institutions with undergraduate degrees in computer science or closely related fields.

For international students from countries where English is not the official language, a minimum passing score on TOEFL, ILETS or PTE is required.

Applicants without an undergraduate degree in computer science or a closely related field may be considered for admission based on their qualification equivalent to the required prerequisites or work experience including introductory courses in computer programming, data structures, algorithms, operating systems, software engineering, discrete mathematics, calculus and statistics.

The program seeks highly motivated and qualified students. In addition to submitting standard academic transcripts and test scores, students are strongly encouraged to submit a written essay or resume about prior work experience and participate in a phone interview when necessary to assess the level of their qualification.

Culminating Experience (6 units)


The culminating experience marks the end of a graduate program. It demonstrates mastery of disciplinary materials and meets requirements from Section 40510 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. Please consult the Culminating Experience section in this catalog for more information.
