Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies includes three concentrations, from which students select one – African American Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies or Asian American Studies. Through interdisciplinary study, the degree prepares students for further training in a wide range of fields, including education, social work, law, community development, and health.

In addition to the requirements for the major, students must meet all other university requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Please consult the Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree  section in this catalog for complete information.

Asian American Studies Concentration (15 units)

The Asian American Studies concentration offers opportunities for students to learn about the experiences, expression, history and contemporary social, political and economic conditions of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry. Committed to social justice, the program focuses on unique learning experiences that foster critical thinking, community engagement and leadership. Majors completing the community research/engagement requirement (CER) explore the relationship between their individual learning experiences, evolving identity and voice with their understanding and practice of “community.” The CER may involve service learning/community-engaged learning, community-engaged scholarly/creative activity or internship. Students who complete the degree take with them a sensitivity to and knowledge of Asian American and Pacific Islander issues, history and identities in areas, such as artistic expression, health, education and civic engagement.
