Introduction

The Department of Mathematics offers a standard undergraduate major program in mathematics with concentrations in Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Pure Mathematics and Teaching Mathematics. Courses are provided to satisfy the needs of:

  • Students planning graduate study in mathematics or related disciplines
  • Students planning to use mathematics in a career in business, industry or government
  • Students planning to teach at the elementary or secondary level
  • Students majoring in a discipline using mathematics as an analytic or descriptive tool

Degree Descriptions

The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics has five distinct concentrations so that students can select an appropriate pathway depending on their career goals. Each of the concentrations enables student to develop the following: the ability to construct mathematical proofs; the ability to think analytically and critically, and to formulate problems, solve them and interpret their solutions; the ability to utilize technology when doing mathematics; and communicate mathematics in written and oral forms. The B.A. program prepares students to be competitive in the job market and/or to pursue graduate education.

The Master of Arts in Mathematics (Applied Option) is designed for students who are interested in using mathematical analysis in business, industry or government. Students develop the ability to use mathematical and computational methods to solve real-world problems and demonstrate the ability to communicate mathematical and computational findings in written and oral forms. As a culminating experience, faculty-supervised student teams work on projects sponsored by local industrial firms.  Each project offers students opportunities to apply classroom skills to real-world problems. Graduates of the program are competitive in the job market and/or are prepared to continue their graduate studies at the doctoral level.

The Master of Arts in Mathematics (Teaching Option) is designed for students who are interested in deepening their knowledge of mathematics, teaching at the community college level or pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education. Students: develop the following: the ability to analyze problems and persevere in solving them; the ability to communicate mathematics in written and oral forms; and the ability to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Students in the program experience best practices of teaching and how to implement them in their classrooms. Graduates of this program are competitive in the job market and/or are prepared to continue their graduate studies at the doctoral level.

The Master of Science in Statistics offers a modern state-of-the art technology-oriented curriculum that prepares students for careers in business, industry or government that involves applications of statistics. All courses are delivered live via a two-way stream, and students have the choice of attending classes in person, or remotely. Students develop the ability to decipher and solve real-world problems, demonstrate the ability to utilize technology and statistical software to construct statistical models and perform statistical computations. Students also gain consulting experience with Southern California firms and develop the ability to communicate statistical findings in written and oral forms. Graduates of the program are  competitive in the job market and/or are prepared to continue their graduate studies at the doctoral level.
