(18 UNITS)

The Law, Politics and Society Minor provides students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the law, law’s effect on society and how social forces impact the legal system. Students learn how to: read, interpret and analyze legal writing; assess the design, actions and motivations of legal institutions, such as the courts, juries and the legal profession; explain how historical, political and cultural factors impact the development of law and concepts of justice, including serving as social control and norm and status quo enforcement; evaluate how law and the legal system differentially impact people based on race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality and religion; and learn to apply the above in their own analysis of the legal, political and social phenomena they encounter.

Study Plan

The Minor in Law, Politics and Society consists of 18 units, including required course POSC 375 . The remaining 15 units must be taken from the list of approved electives or in consultation with an adviser. Students may take no more than 9 units from any one department. Students who wish to use an internship as an elective may only apply 3 units of CRJU 492 /POSC 492  to the minor requirements.

Twelve units, at least six of which must be upper-division, must be distinct from the student’s major. Students must have a 2.0 GPA in the minor.
