Ethnic Studies, Option in Asian American Studies, B.A.

The Bachelor of Art in Ethnic Studies (Option in Asian American Studies) offers opportunities for students to learn about the experiences, expression, history and contemporary social, political and economic conditions of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry. Committed to social justice, the program focuses on unique learning experiences that foster critical thinking, community engagement and leadership. Students who complete the degree take with them a sensitivity to and knowledge of Asian American and Pacific Islander issues, history and identities in areas such as artistic expression, health, education and civic engagement. The Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies includes courses for the option, General Education, all-university requirements and free electives.

Option in Asian American Studies (36 units)


Topical Requirements (12 units)


In consultation with an adviser, students may focus their studies on Asian Pacific American Ethnic Groups or topics in Asian Pacific American Studies, such as literature, film/video, families, psychology, etc.

Comparative Cultures Breadth Requirements (6 units)


Asian Pacific Languages or Asian Pacific Cultures and Social Institutions (3 units)


Community Research/Engagement Requirement (3 units)


All Asian American Studies majors must complete ASAM 495 , ASAM 496  or ASAM 499 .
