The master’s degree in Financial Engineering and Risk Management provides preparation for professional careers in the financial services industry and government, and provides a foundation for further graduate research work at the doctoral level. The curriculum is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in business, economics, engineering, computer science, mathematics and actuarial science.

Admission Requirements

Admission is competitive and is based on the holistic assessment of each candidate’s academic and personal/professional background. Students must meet the CSU requirements for admission to a master’s degree program. Please consult the Graduate Admissions section in this catalog for complete information. In addition, applicants will be evaluated based on the following:

Satisfactory score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)*
A bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; a minimum grade-point average of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester units attempted and in good standing at the last college attended**
(For international students?), a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper exam, or a score of 80 on the internet based (iBT) is required
Minimum two letters of recommendation
Resume
Statement of pupose (500 words maximum)
Recommendation from the MSFRE Admissions Committee based upon a review of the above requirements, the student’s “Statement of Purpose” and prior work experience

Additional coursework may be required of admitted students who holistically satisfy the criterial but are weak in one of the above areas.

Notes:

* Students who do not achieve a minimum score of 4 on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Writing Assessment Test, a minimum score of 4 on the Graduate Management Admissions test (GMAT) Analytical Writing Assessment, or have not completed the upper-division writing requirement at any CSU campus, will be required to take BUAD 501 . The writing requirement should be met within two semesters of admission.

** Students admitted with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than business administration will be required to take (or demonstrate proficiency in) the following courses/academic topics prior to or during their residency at CSUF: FIN 320 ; ACCT 201A ; ECON 201 ; ECON 202 .

Students admitted with a bachelor’s degree in business administration will be required to take (or demonstrate proficiency in) the following courses/academic topics prior to or during their residency at CSUF: MATH 150A ; MATH 150B ; MATH 338 .
